During a
Field Museum
sponsored expedition of the abandoned freight subway tunnels located forty feet below the streets of downtown Chicago, Phil O'Keefe carefully sketched and documented the details of a long unused locomotive, Engine 508, originally built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1907.
A Museum Quality Scale Model Is Born The rough field sketch shown at the left is preliminary to the creation of the model assembly concept sketch which is shown below.
Using the sketch and CAD drawing as a guide, machine tools were used
to cut and shape individual parts from brass bars and rods, which were in turn used to create patterns from vulcanized rubber molds. These molds enabled the mass production of cast white metal parts and their assembly into models of the
locomotive. The photograph below shows the many pieces which were required to build one model.
