Technical Illustration

At EngineeringExpert.net our primary concern is to be understood by our audience, whatever the technical proficiency level.  As a certified instructor in private industry, Philip J. O'Keefe has long-ranging experience in teaching both technical and nontechnical subject matter.  His audiences have ranged from bargaining unit personnel to executive management.

In addition to being a Licensed Professional Engineer, Mr. O'Keefe is a recognized and awarded visual artist who has frequently been engaged as a technical illustrator and museum-quality model builder.  His work has been commissioned not only by museums, but by major corporations, technical magazines, and authors.  His demonstrated visual presentation skills and artistic abilities coupled with his technical expertise render him uniquely able to present even the most puzzling of technical concepts in an understandable manner.

How many times has discovery yielded technical issues, diagrams and photographs that are puzzling and awash in indistinguishable details?  The solution to these problems lies in the use of visual aids.  Studies show that the most complex subject matter is rendered comprehensible, even interesting, through their use. Adept at analyzing physical evidence, then simplifying its presentation through the use of diagrams, drawings, and photographs, Philip J. O'Keefe is able to elicit clarity in his reports and courtroom exhibits where none is readily apparent.  Below are some examples of his work:

Suppose inspection of a power tool drive mechanism yields the photograph to the right.  What is depicted is confusing to the lay person because it lacks clarifying annotation.  Also, the background is distracting to the eye.

The solution to this problem would be to enhance the photograph to eliminate distractions, improve contrast, and redirect  the eye to only what is necessary to express an opinion.  In this way the viewer's focus is drawn to the desired components and confusion is eliminated:

In this photograph an electrical power tool trigger switch mechanism is shown inside the tool handle.  The visual image would be improved by retouching and annotating, as in the above example, but things would still appear unclear due to the lack of distinction between the shapes in the trigger mechanism and the handle.

In this situation Mr. O'Keefe's technical illustration techniques most effectively illustrate only the components with relevance to the case.  The result is an easy-to-follow three dimensional drawing:
